Bulgaria President opened discussion on UN Sustainable Development Goals

President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev will open a meeting-discussion dedicated to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The forum is themed the Business – Power for Good.
The event took place at the Hilton Hotel in the Bulgarian capital city Sofia.
The discussion was organised by the Bulgarian Network of the UN Global Compact, which unites companies, NGOs and academic institutions, and aims at encouraging the Bulgarian companies to recognise and undertake new responsibilities for the implementation of the 17 global goals for sustainable development of the UN until 2030.
A road map of the responsible business in Bulgaria for the implementation of the goals was presented during the forum, as well as ideas and working practices for provision of including and high-quality education, sustainable economic growth encouragement and responsible consumption, encouragement of innovations, provision of healthy life and others.
“Bulgaria has its national ideal for the establishment of a “clean and sacred republic” and it should follow the goals and direction towards “being equal to the other European nations”, which were set by revolutionary Vasil Levski and the leaders of the Bulgarian National Revival.”
This is what Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said speaking at the opening of the forum.
Mr Plevneliev stressed that what Bulgaria needed was a long-term development plan, which to be based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
“Nowadays, certain politicians open a debate and speak about adoption of new doctrines. Are we going to re-define the national ideal set by Levski again? Who will dare to do that,” the President asked.
The Bulgarian Head of State was explicit that the Bulgarian society did not need the elaboration of the latest strategies and making promises for reforms and called for concrete results in terms of improvement of the work of the judicial system.
“We need a solid groundwork,” Rosen Plevneliev remarked and recalled that the Bulgaria 2020 National Development Programme was adopted after consultations at the President’s Office.
