Bulgaria PM congratulates Bulgarians on 138th anniversary of liberation
Bulgaria celebrated the 138th anniversary of its Liberation on March 3. There were different solemn ceremonies organised in the entire country to mark the national holiday. On 3 March 1878 the Treaty of San Stefano was signed, putting an end to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and re-establishing the Bulgarian state.
Celebratory ceremonies were held in all cities across the country.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov congratulated all Bulgarians on the anniversary.
“Happy March 3, Bulgarians! I congratulate all fellow Bulgarians on the National Holiday of Bulgaria. Let us again remember on this day freedom is achieved through lots of work, efforts, and battles. Let us not forget our ancestors who fought for the freedom of our fatherland,” the Prime Minister’s address read.
“Let us honour them and follow their example – deeds are needed, not just words. We should be united as a nation, persisting, and tolerant also at hard times. We should remember freedom and democracy are a right every person should enjoy but as a civil society, a part of the European family, let us not forget we also have obligations.
We ought to move on in the time we live in and with the latest challenge Europe is faced with but without losing our strong sense of justice; [we should move on] with our humaneness but also protect vigorously and implicitly the Bulgarian spirit and patriotism. Today, I want all of us to continue building our country, protect Bulgarian things, protect our European values, and endeavour to work together for a better future. Happy National Holiday, be strong, brave, and proud Bulgarians!,” the address read further.
The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 was a conflict between a Russian Empire-led coalition and the Ottoman Empire, which ended with the signing of the preliminary Treaty of San Stefano on March 3, 1878.
