Bulgaria held Border – 2016 joint drill at SW border

Border – 2016 joint drill was held in the responsibility zone of the Border Police Department of the town of Petrich on Saturday, March 5.
The drill was attended by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Interior Minister Rumiana Bachvarova, Head of the Defence Lieutenant-General Konstantin Popov, Director of the General Directorate of Border Police Senior Commissioner Antonio Angelov, District Governor of Blagoevgrad Biser Mihaylov and other officials and representatives of the local authorities.
The training aimed at coordinating the joint actions between the forces and means of the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Defence and the Bulgarian Red Cross, as well as maintaining the readiness to react in case of possible enhanced migration pressure.
The drill was followed by a press conference, which will take place at the Kulata border checkpoint. Here is what the officials said.
“As you know, this drill was organised within shortest deadline at the order of the prime minister,” said Leutenant-General Konstantin Popov, Head of the Defence, speaking at the briefing.
“Cooperation with our colleagues from the Interior Ministry is perfect,” Mr Popov remarked.
“What the boys with the army did is appreciated highly and evaluated as good. I think we have provided enough equipment,” he added.
“Speaking of everyday necessities, everything has been provided to the maximum, the helicopters are equipped both for rescue and for search operations. There is work to be done with our colleagues with the Interior Ministry and we will do our best to meet the tasks,” Lieutenant-General Konstantin Popov remarked
“I think that on the grounds of what we see at the moment, we can develop further our plans and guarantee before the Bulgarian citizens that we are absolutely ready to react even in the hardest situation in terms of illegal border crossing of migrants,” Interior Minister Rumiana Bachvarova said.
“The major purpose of the drill is to see how the forces are dislocated in a real situation, how the tasks are implemented and what is most important – to coordinate the efforts between the army, the national police, the border police and the gendarmerie. This is a new situation at the moment and from now on we should develop skills so as to react in good coordination,” the minister explained.
“What we saw within an hour included several possible situations, including rendering aid, rescuing injured people, so as to guarantee the security of our officers, too,” Ms Bachvarova commented further.
50 military units took part in the drills, including 2 helicopters, special purpose vehicle, San Cat armoured vehicles, gendarmerie, fire truck and ambulance.
