Bulgaria should join Istanbul Convention on preventing, combating violence against women: Ombudsman

“Bulgaria should join the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women,” Bulgarian Ombudsman Maya Manolova said speaking on the occasion of March 8 - International Women's Day, speaking for Radio FOCUS.
In her words, the society should firmly oppose this burning problem and support all women, who have fallen victims of domestic violence.
“The signing of this convention brings clearly outlined engagements on behalf of the state towards taking actions, including legislative amendments, amendments to the Protection against Domestic Violence Act, adoption of an act on equality, as well as amendments to the Penal Code. There is also a need of concrete practical measures in support of the women that are victims of violence.
As you know, there is only one shelter for women, who are victims of domestic violence, in the capital city Sofia and it has the capacity to shelter 8 people. There are around 15 such centres in the country, i.e. there are district cities that cannot offer such shelter for women, who are victims of domestic violence,” Ms Manolova explained.
