Bulgaria parliament chair opens international conference on the power of words

Chairperson of the Bulgarian National Assembly Tsetska Tsacheva opened an international conference themed the Power of words: Networks, Radicalisation, Ridicule.
The forum was organised on the occasion of the International Francophonie Day. The event took place at the building of the parliament on Monday, March 14.
The conference was organised by the Bulgarian National Assembly and the Standing Delegation of the National Assembly in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie.
Several officials made addresses during the forum, such as MP Boris Stanimirov, Representative of the Standing Delegation of the National Assembly in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie; Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Rumen Alezandrov; French Ambassador to Bulgaria H.E. Xavier Lapeyre de Cabanes; and others.
The different panels of the conference were themed Radicalisation of the Young People in the Social Networks, Humour as Political Criticism – Performativity and Ambiguity, and others.
“We can oppose violent extremism and radicalization of the young through the instruments of education and culture, and by getting to know one another,” said Tsetska Tsacheva, speaking at the event.
“It is a great honour for me to open this international conference to mark the International Francophonie Day. I am content not only with the visible interest evinced in this initiative but also with the fact such forums are becoming a tradition for the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria. The parliament is today hosting the third edition of the conference,” the official remarked.
She congratulated the International Organisation of La Francophonie on the selected topic of this year’s discussions.
In Tsacheva’s words, more and more connections are seen in the world we live in.
“The Internet and social networks provide unlimited opportunities for sharing information, getting to know one another, creativity, and innovations,” the parliament chair pointed out.
Tsetska Tsacheva specified over 2 billion people used social networks to their mutual benefit.
“That same field of communication is however used by certain forces to forge the common legacy of humankind. It serves as a megaphone for those that turn religion into an instrument and who use the social networks to lay too much emphasis on social inequalities and marginalisation in our society, deny human rights, harm diversity rights, and deal a blow at the heart of the main values of the human civilisation,” the parliament chair explained.
In her view, this is what violent extremism tried to do in 2015 through the terror attacks against freedom of expression, against people’s common cultural heritage, and historical richness.
“These terror acts affected not only France but also other French-speaking countries and, in general, Francophonie space countries,” Tsacheva stated.
In her words, the response of the international community was explicit.
“We can oppose violent extremism and radicalization of the young through the instruments of education and culture, getting to know one another, tolerance, and respecting others’ opinions in dialogue. They are those that provide support and trust in one’s own forces. I am impressed with the academic and professional potential of today’s debate,” the parliament official commented.
She wished success to the forum and confirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to the initiative.
