Bulgaria’s Supreme Judicial Council heard Sofia City Court Chairperson

Bulgaria’s Supreme Judicial Council heard Chairperson of Sofia City Court Kaloyan Topalov at its sitting on Thursday.
Mr Topalov’s name was involved in a series of scandals recently. He was accused of making a comb-out at Sofia City Court and appointing close associates on high-ranking positions.
A couple of weeks ago in a TV interview Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov accused Sofia City Court of dependence on the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party. He said that it was concerning that more and more judges got involved with certain political power, which was the DSB.
Kaloyan Topalov refuted the accusations.
Topalov’s name also emerged right after the suicide of judge Tsvetan Tsvetanov, whose parents said that their son had been put under pressure over certain trials. Topalov refuted the accusations again.
Kaloyan Topalov was the only candidate for the post of Chairperson of Sofia City Court after the dismissal of previous chairperson Vladimira Yaneva because of serious administrative and other violations.
“The pace and the quality of the work of Sofia City Court have never been this good for the past 10-15 years,” Sofia City Court Chairperson Kaloyan Pargov said speaking during his hearing.
Mr Pargov was heard by the Council over the implementation of the recommendations set in the report of the ad hoc committee established by the Supreme Judicial Council.
“Regaining the trust placed in the Sofia City Court is a cause. What the two managements of the court did exceeds the conclusions about lapses in the report. The report does not present the huge efforts made to achieve the results in such a short time. The pace and the quality of the work of Sofia City Court have never been this good for the past 10-15 years,” Mr Pargov remarked.
In his words, the achieved results are the fruit of the hard work of the entire management of the court.
“I invited some of these people here today so as to show the faces of the people, who contributed to pushing Sofia City Court to the right track,” he added.
“The only thing that connects us is not kinship ties but the wish to set things at the Sofia City Court in order,” Kaloyan Pargov commented further.
