European Socialists were the initiators for strict observation of women's rights: MEP Iliana Yotova

Socialists in Europe were the initiators for strict observation of women's rights. That is what head of the Delegation of Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament Iliyana Yotova said at the opening of the conference Sustainable Future of The Danube Region - the Role of Women, a reporter of FOCUS News Agency announced.
Iliana Yotova thanked all those who attended this conference. In her words, the conference is extremely timely.
“All believe that gender inequality in Europe is something that is a second priority. Not only it is second priority, but unfortunately this topic was missing in all debates in the last two years in both national and European aspect. We are not naive. We all know that in the beginning the heavy economic, financial, social crisis and migration, as if moved the attention of European leaders in another direction. Moreover, they not only does not deal with our topic, but unfortunately began to use it as a political weapon,” Iliyana Yotova noted.
According to her, it is bad when talking about political leaders in Europe that we usually believe that only applies to men.
“Dear ladies, in Europe there are enough women political leaders, but unfortunately they also deviate from this theme, which is not to their credit," she added.
According to her, as a rule, in case of economic and social crisis, most often suffer socially disadvantaged people.
"These are women, children, elderly, young people. Not surprisingly, the biggest shock really fell like a huge hammer on young people in Europe and unemployment was in its height in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Socialists in Europe upheld the great thesis on youth employment and additional EU money for youth”, she said.
MEP Yotova noted that unfortunately, this policy cannot start operating yet neither at national nor European level.
“Every third woman in Europe is subject to violence”, Iliyana Yotova said.
According to her, a few years ago this problem was almost unknown for Bulgaria. She said that women in Bulgaria were ashamed to say that they had problems.
“The latest statistics indicate that between 23 -24% of women in Bulgaria admitted that they were victims of domestic violence. Total of 3.7 million women are subject to sexual abuse a year. 98% of human trafficking in Europe are women and adolescent girls,” Yotova said. According to her, these are shocking figures, which together with NGOs have been repeatedly spoken.
Yotova stressed that one of the main topics on which the party operates nationally, but also at European level was the demographic problem.
“Probably, there will be more nominations for leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, both of women and men,”, Iliyana Yotova, said in connection with forthcoming nominations of the Congress for BSP leader.
Asked which of the two - Korneliya Ninova and Mihail Mikov has better chances for grouping the Left, she said that they both had good chances.
“Probably, there will be more nominations for leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, both of women and men. The conferences have just begun. It remains to be seen,” MEP Yotova noted.
“Each of them will have the chance to develop their vision about what BSP has to do hereinafter, where to locate in the political space, which collation partners to chose and how to prepare for the presidential elections,” Iliyana Yotova said and added that she would support the one who proposed the most appropriate response to the special needs of the party.
“We don’t approve mechanism for cooperation and verification to be linked directly with Schengen,” Iliyana Yotova said.
Iliyana Yotova commented on the topic of continuing double standard regarding our accession to Schengen and so-called mechanism for cooperation and verification that the two countries [Bulgaria and Romania] have been receiving for 8 years now, which is total of 13 reports, in which we have been monitored on the progress in the fight against organised crime, corruption and judicial reform.
“Yesterday and the day before we held together with the Romanian colleagues a very strong event in Brussels with a clear question - how long this double standard will continue. How long the stigmatising finger-wagging from the Europe on the two countries will continue given a truly alarming statistics in Europe, which shows that similar problems exist in all 28 states,” Yotova outlined.
“We can talk as much as we want that there is nothing to do between the two processes, but every time when it comes to the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen, European leaders say this cannot happen because we are still under this monitoring, under the mechanism of the European Commission," Yotova added.
