Bulgaria capital mayor makes comments on central issues

 Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, spoke Saturday for Darik Radio, announcing news and making comments on central issues.
“The waste treatment plant of Sofia produced 7,300 tonnes of high-quality compost and over 170 MWh of electricity in its first six months,” the municipal official said.
In her words, a total of 510 tonnes of ferrous metals, 76 tonnes of papers, 28 tonnes of non-ferrous metals, 28 tonnes of plastic, 102 tonnes of nylon, and 833 tonnes of glass have been sorted since the inauguration of the plant.
“Meanwhile, its installations have produced 7,300 tonnes of high-quality compost and over 170 MWh of electricity,” the mayor announced.
She specified the main effect the installation had produced was the recycling of over 50% of waste in Sofia.
Fandakova specified they had the vision of turning waste from a problem into resources.
In her view, this has already taken place.
The mayor stressed the big challenge Sofia faced as a big city was air cleanliness.
Ms Fandakova remarked there were two factors involved in air pollution in Sofia.
“One of them is undeniably traffic and cars and the other, which is really a leading one, is home heating, especially in the city’s periphery,” she stated.
“What we have done over the last years is investing in public transport improvement. We have built 21 km of metro lines in the past 6 years; we continue building metro lines and the implementation of a large-scale programme for public transport modernisation,” the mayor remarked.
In her words, after old trolleybuses were largely replaced with new ones, the first new trams and buses have also been delivered.
“I expect 110 new buses more will be delivered this year and we will table the new programme for modernisation of the bus fleet at Sofia Municipal Council in several days. It [the programme] envisages the reduction of the average age of buses to under 7 years in 2019. We plan to launch a procedure for 30 other new buses this year, too,” Yordanka Fandakova added.
