Bulgaria stepped up border control after Brussels attacks
“I have ordered stepped-up control at the borders,” Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister for Coalition Policy and Public Administration and Minister of Interior Rumiana Bachvarova said speaking at an extraordinary briefing in connection with the terrorist attacks in Brussels, FOCUS News Agency journalist reported.Ms Bachvarova said that the border control had been enhanced to 100%, which meant that all vehicles crossing the border will undergo a thorough inspection.
“A special police operation is underway, with stepped-up police presence and enhanced security measures,” Ms Bachvarova remarked.
She added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs worked for establishing contact and informing the Bulgarians in Brussels, as well as those planning trips.
Minister Bachvarova added that there was a high risk for the European security at the moment.
“The situation is highly concerning, there is high risk for all European countries,” Ms Bachvarova remarked.
“It will be useful for everyone to show awareness and to comply with instructions and show understanding with the measures we undertake,” Rumyana Bachvarova said.
“I what to make you sure that we are working closely synchronised with all state institutions and are monitoring the situation on an hourly basis. We take decisions to meet all requirements and preparedness of the state in such challenging events which we are seeing on the TV,” she added.
“We urge citizens to remain calm and assure them that all institutions work for their security. The Ministry of Interior is committed to provide with full information available,” the Interior Minister said further.
“Our offices and institutions reported updated information on terror attack in Brussels today. It was analyzed in view of the characteristics that led to the change in the security environment. Ministers reported on the measures already taken and found that they were in line with the plan for combating terrorism, which we have passed. The Prime Minister took part in the discussion and gave his recommendations,” Minister Bachvarova explained.
She added that based on the report there were specific recommendations to the institutions in which to increase its activities in respect of monitoring the specific parameters of the security environment and in terms of preparedness for the implementation of additional security measures.
