Bulgarian agri minster attended the national consultative council on stock-breeding

Minister of Agriculture and Food Desislava Taneva attended the consultative council on stock-breeding which was held in the town of Veliko Tarnovo on Tuesday.
“Situation in the livestock sector is worse in 13 EU countries than it is in Bulgaria,” Minister Desislava Taneva said before the consultative council on stock-breeding, a reporter of Radio FOCUS - Veliko Tarnovo.
She pointed out that the crisis was due to the decline in revenues from most agricultural commodities. In her words, the reason for this was the Russian embargo imposed in late 2014. According to Minister Taneva the crisis affected both the Bulgarian agricultural producers and producers in other countries of the European Union.
She pointed out that prices were constantly falling since 2014. At the end of 2015 there was stabilisation of the sector for 2-3 months.
Minister Desislava Taneva pointed out that this stabilisation was due to granted by the European Union package of support to farmers, amounting to EUR 420 million.
According to her, these funds have not led to a sustainable improvement of the sector.
“All countries are in this situation. The worst is the situation in the dairy sector,” Desislava Taneva said.
“Milk producers and processors sat down to talks despite the crisis in the sector and agreed that the path ahead of them is in the creation of joint organisations,” Minister of Agriculture and Food, Desislava Taneva, told journalists.
“Topics on the agenda again were about labelling of food. There is amendment to the regulation for the labelling, according to which all dairy products and foodstuffs on the shop shelves in general, made of Bulgarian row materials shall be branded with the logo and the Bulgarian national flag. I hope there will be no objections to amendments to be passed so that to enter in force,” Minister Taneva stated.
She added that it was declared a plan for inspections that would continue in terms of checking the content of vegetable fats in products that were not labelled as imitating.
“For first time, despite of the severe crisis, milk producers and processors sat down at one table to talks and we agreed that the path ahead is in the creation of joint organisations of both producers and processors,” she noted.
“We have not talked about the protest. I've always said that we are fairly enough open in politics and everyone is entitled to express their attitude towards politics. I never speak on the topic of protest because it would mean to say “let's see what we do to avoid protests”. This would not be a sustainable policy in any case, so we have not raised the topic,” Minister Taneva commented further.
“Consumption depends on the income of the population,” the Minster said further. She explained that there are large volumes of imitating food on the Bulgarian market that are placed on special stands. They contain vegetable fats instead of raw milk. Minister Taneva added that even dairy products that are not imitating contain concentrated and dried milk.
“There are definitely quality products in our retail network such. There are cheeses made of raw Bulgarian milk which are more expensive than imitating products. Consumption and what we choose to consume, depends on the income we have. The aim of all manufacturers, not just here, but everywhere in the community, and the world is lower cost, with the aim of greater market shares and thus generate more profits," Minister Taneva said.
She added that what the state can do is to strengthen the control over the presentation of products and product labelling.
Minster Desislava Taneva pointed out that in Bulgaria there were laboratories that had the equipment to determine whether the final product had a content of vegetable fats that were not declared on the label.
