Bulgaria ready with draft bill on terrorism act: minister

“Draft bill on the terrorism act is ready,” Bulgarian Minister of Justice Ekaterina Zaharieva announced speaking with journalists after the sitting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.
“Before the sitting, together with the Prime Minister we discussed the progress on the act. The draft bill is ready. The Ministry of Interior is working on it and it is absolutely coordinated at initial stage, and thus it will be adopted soon,” Ms Zaharieva explained.
“You know that this is one of Bulgaria’s priorities. The Prime Minister has been talking about the package of measures for a long time.
At the previous EU Council a draft bill on the so-called directive on combating terrorism was adopted. Bulgaria undertook amendments to the Penal Code last year in connection with the trips with the purpose of terrorism,” she commented further.
In her words, the Bulgarian Penal Code is much more restricted than the measures adopted in the directive.
“It envisages criminalisation of the trips with the purpose of terrorism within the EU borders, while the directive – only the trips outside the EU,” the minister said, adding that Bulgaria worked on transposing the texts of the directive that were missing in the Penal Code before the adoption of the directive.
Minister Zaharieva added that the draft bill would be filed at the parliament within a two-week deadline.
