Bulgarian Orthodox Church marks Annunciation

  Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates on Friday, March 25, Annunciation, or the announcement by angel Gabriel to Saint Mary she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. 
Bulgarian people call Annunciation “Blagoveshtenie” and “Blagovets”, which are a reference to the good news announced, “blag” meaning “good, nice” and “vest” meaning “a piece of news” in Bulgarian. This day is also called “Half Easter”.
According to folklore beliefs, cuckoos and swallows come to bring the good news winter is over and summer is beginning.
It is also believed each wound heals very fast on this day. For this reason girls’ ears are pierced on the day of Annunciation so that they can wear earrings.
