We annually co-finance over 100 sports events through municipal budget: Bulgaria capital mayor

“Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, has been bestowed the title European Capital of Sport 2018 and this is the greatest recognition for the opportunities to develop the mass sport in the capital, as well as for the good practices and experience in organising sports events. The title is also recognition for the potential of Sofia to create conditions for sports,” Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova said during the presentation of the Sofia European Capital of Sport initiative at the National Sports Academy.
High-ranking officials attended the event as well.
In Ms Fandakova’s words, the 2018 European Capital of Sport title is not just recognition for Sofia, but for the capital of Bulgaria.
“Therefore, it is also a great responsibility for the entire country,” the mayor added, as cited by Focus News Agency.
The Sofia European Capital of Sport initiative is focused on mass sports, and we all know that the mass sports and the big sports are inextricably linked, Ms Fandakova explained.
“We annually co-finance the holding of over 100 sports events, the highest number of which are city championships, over 50 projects for schools, nurseries, and regional administrations through the municipal budget,” said Yordanka Fandakova.
According to the official, European and world championships have been held in the city in the past years.
In her words, Sofia Municipality aims to provide more sports opportunities close to people’s homes and encourage grassroots sports.
“We completed the repairs to the Triaditsa sports hall, which is a municipal sports hall, last year. It was given to the Bulgarian Basketball Association to be used for 10 years for free and a number of competitions take place in it,” the mayor explained.
In her words, Bulgaria’s largest outdoor sports complex was built last year in Vazrazhdane Park in Sofia’s Zona B5 residential district.
“The new sports zone covers nearly 24 decares and provides lots of opportunities for sport for all family members,” Yordanka Fandakova remarked.
According to the official, the municipal authorities rehabilitate city parks in which they build sports facilities.
The mayor informed further there were sports hall in all 198 municipal nurseries in Sofia and swimming pools – in 70 of them.
The municipal head noted the local authorities were improving the conditions for sports in schools, too.
“We envisaged money for the repair of 6 gyms in schools and will continue to construction of sports grounds for street fitness”, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova said.
“Total of 6 sports grounds for street fitness will be built this summer, then we’ll continue with mounting of outdoor tennis tables, which is a great opportunity for both adults and children to practice sport near their homes,” the Mayor said and added that Sofia Municipality has allotted money for the repair of 21 playgrounds, too.
“Sofia has unique conditions and arguments to become better city for amateur sports , many green areas and parks, as well as sports facilities etc. We hope that the full potential of the Vitosha Park will be used more and more. Recent events organized there actually shown that people have a great desire to practice sports, both in summer and winter,” Yordanka Fandakova said.
