There is proposal the price of single trip ticket in Bulgaria capital to become BGN 1.6: official

“We propose the price of a single trip ticket becomes BGN 1.60,” said Simeon Arnaudov, Executive Director of Sofia Urban Mobility Centre EAD, speaking during a presentation of Sofia Urban Mobility Centre’s project for a 2016 public transport economic framework in conformity with their agreement with Sofia Municipality, FOCUS News Agency reported.
Arnaudov noted the total sum to finance public transport in the capital Sofia in 2016 amounted to BGN 283 million.
According to him, the share of single trip tickets use is 15%, the share of regular-tariff travel cards – 23%, while that of preferential-tariff travel cards – 62%.
The company official commented the proposals aimed namely at stimulating the use of travel cards.
Simeon Arnaudov explained a trip cost BGN 0.44 with a monthly ground-transport card, while it cost BGN 0.38 with a monthly metro card.
“The new tariff policy is aimed to meet the needs of transport. We encourage the use of documents covering longer periods of time. We would like to stress we propose the prices of all travel cards are not changed,” he added.
Sofia Urban Mobility Centre EAD proposes the price of a single trip ticket rises to BGN 1.60, while the price of tickets for 10 trips that can be used by one passenger only rises from BGN 8 to BGN 12.
The introduction of a monthly card for the metro and one public transport line is also envisaged. It will cost BGN 43.
Sofia Urban Mobility Centre EAD also proposes a three-day card for all public transport lines at the price of BGN 10 and a “Sofia card” for tourists and guests to Sofia at the price of BGN 20.
“A price has to be paid in order to achieve quality. It cannot be produced otherwise,” said Simeon Arnaudov.
As regards the proposal for the price of single trip tickets to rise by BGN 0.60to BGN 1.60, the official noted Sofia Urban Mobility Centre aimed to introduce the European practice, which placed the heaviest burden on those that travelled with tickets occasionally and those that engaged in fare evasion.
“You know there is no system that uses penalty fares to support itself. Sanctions have a completely different function; they should come on time, should be adequate, and produce an effect. I mean, they aim at making people travel with the proper documents,” Arnaudov remarked when asked whether it was planned for penalty fares imposed on people engaging in ticket evasion to increase.
According to Simeon Arnaudov, large investments are made in public transport services in the capital.
“BGN 300 million was given for new vehicles. BGN 160 million more is to allocated. The third metro line is under construction. Co-financing of the municipality amounts to BGN 20 million per year. A price has to be paid in order to achieve quality. There is no [other] way. It cannot be produced otherwise,” Arnaudov stated.
He specified it was proposed the new prices of tickets enter into force as of June 1.
The official commented more efforts would be made to reduce the number of people resorting to fare evasion.
