WWF and Scouts in Central and Eastern Europe to mobilize young people for Earth Hour and beyond

WWF and Scouts' organizations from Central and Eastern Europe, part of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and independent organizations, are deepening their collaboration to drive awareness and action on nature and the environment, in recognition of the enormous challenges facing our region and the important role of young people in creating a more sustainable world.
 
Starting with Earth Hour, Scouts will join with WWF to build  a mass awareness of nature's importance by volunteering in local events in support of global initiatives. Earth Hour has been a game-changer for promoting climate and environmental action across the globe. This year, as the movement aims to spark global conversations and actions on issues such as healthy forests, plastic-free oceans and wildlife conservation, Scouts worldwide will add their energy and dedication to create an even greater impact.
 
In Bulgaria, WWF and Scouts will work together on inspiring mainstream activities for environmental action and environmental education. They will plant trees, host workshops about separating trash and recycling, and participate at a pre-Earth Hour farmers' market. All scouts - over 1,000 in Bulgaria - will make a promise to minimize the use of plastic on the Earth Hour 2018.
 
In Romania, scouts will organize local events for Earth Hour 2018 in several cities to raise awareness of sustainable living. In May and June 2018, WWF will participate in the 9th European Scout Educational Methods Forum in Bucharest with workshops and discussions on climate change and wildlife. The Forum is one of the most popular events that takes place in Europe and focuses on global challenges and concerns. 
 
In Ukraine, WWF will  collaborate with the Plast National Scout Organization, which is the largest in the country, to launch an Instagram contest 24 to 24th for the Earth Hour 2018. Participants have to post 24 pictures showing how to protect nature. WWF and the eco-committee of the Plast organization will choose the toon the Earth Hour.

World Scouting and WWF began working together in 1973 on environmental education. The ongoing successful partnership aims to help achieve the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity's Aichi Biodiversity Target 1,  which designates that hundreds of millions of people understand the values of biodiversity and the current critical condition of our planet. Better informed and aware, people will  take actions to protect biodiversity and nature, live more sustainably and will expect the same of businesses and their governments. World Scouting and WWF  will also include a new version of one of their earliest joint initiatives, the badge formerly known as the World Conservation Badge (Panda Badge).
 
WWF and World Scouting will continue to collaborate on the World Scout Environment Programme, now in its tenth year, which enables Scouts to earn the World Scout Environment Badge in recognition of their learning and commitment to the natural world.
 
As part of its commitment to the environment, WOSM has also established a network of Scout Centres of Excellence for Nature and the Environment (SCENES) around the world, to enable Scouts, the local community and other visitors to connect and engage with nature.
