Unemployment rate persists at 10.8% in July

Bulgaria's unemployment rate stood at 10.8% in July, exactly the same as in the previous month, showed data from the National Employment Agency. Compared to the same period last year though, when unemployment was 9.47%, the figure represents a substantial increase. Seasonal employment and traditionally higher construction activity during the summer months usually mean slightly lower jobless levels, experts noted. A little over 18,000 people found a job this July, or 4,000 more than a year ago. An increased number of workers were hired thanks to the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy's initiatives and OP Human Resources Development, the agency said.

In the short space of a month 8,346 people were able to go back to work through these programmes, which is 785 more than in July 2011. A total of 18,301 vacancies were filled last month, which is a gain of 4,000, compared to the same period last year, according to the National Employment Agency. Measures set out in the Employment Promotion Act facilitated the recruitment of 123 people in July. A total of 9,790 jobs were on offer by the Labour Office Directorates working in the primary market, or 643 more than in July 2011. The private sector accounted for 6,647 of the total. Different schemes under OP Human Resources Development helped 6,859 people get off the dole. Data breakdown shows 5,251 successful jobseekers via "Development", 1500 via "Increase of Youth Employment Through Their Permanent Inclusion on the Bulgarian Labour Market" and 108 via "Back to work". Employment programmes offer 366 jobs.
