The Bulgarian-Soviet friendship memorial in Varna wakes up to Pussy Riot makeover

The largest monument in Varna - the Bulgarian-Soviet friendship memorial - greeted the morning decorated, Darik Radio reported. Supporters of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot decorated the heads of the memorial’s three women figures with colour cloth hoods. The concrete figures are 11.5 metre high and stand more than 10 metres above the base of the monument. This suggests that the secret operation was pretty dangerous. The “work” is anonymous and no message was written.

The recent decoration of the memorial is believed to be a protest against the two-year jail sentence a Russian court handed down to the three girls from the Pussy Riot band for the “punk prayer” against Vladimir Putin, performed by the trio in a Cathedral in Moscow.

Less than a week ago, the soldier figures of the monument of the Soviet Army in the capital city of Sofia also “woke up” to wearing colourful hoods in sign of support for the three punk rockers from Pussy Riot. The message of the colour hoods was addressed to the Embassy of Russia, the Bulgarian Government, the Parliament and the media. “The group of people” who signed that makeover wanted to attract public attention to the lawsuit, which, according to them, violates the freedom of speech.
