Global Power Consortium is a financial organisation, not a strategic investor

“The claim of the Russian company Atomstroyexport was aimed at exerting pressure on Bulgaria before the signing of the contract on the South Stream gas pipeline,” former Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism in PM Borissov’s Cabinet, Traicho Traikov, said on Nova TV on Thursday. According to him, this pressure is also in connection with the forthcoming visit of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to Bulgaria, with our country’s legal claims to Atomstroyexport and the ‘directed appearance on the stage of the US investor Global Power Consortium’.

“I think this claim was placed in this context because I really believe they have arguments to win it. Global Power Consortium is a financial organization, not a strategic investor. It has no experience in managing nuclear power plants, no long-term intentions for management of energy assets, let alone nuclear ones,” Traicho Traikov commented.

“Its sources of financing are not clear, the money may even come from Al Qaeda. They just do not have their own money,” added Traikov.

Traikov is adamant that citizens do not have enough information in order to vote for or against the construction of the Belene NPP. “Even if you assume that the people vote for the project, what does it mean? A referendum will not answer questions like: What will be the interest rate on the loan that will finance the project? What will be the passive protection systems? What will be the model of the reactor and turbine? Who will be the investor? What will be the distribution of risks?,” commented Traicho Traikov.
