EU lawmakers want the production of foie gras to be abolished

MEPs demanded a ban on the production and sale of foie gras in the European Union, BNR announced. Italian MEP Andrea Zanoni and seven of his colleagues argued that millions of ducks and geese endure torture because production requires the birds to be forcibly fed by pneumatic tubes more often than normal. Frequently, they live in small cages or their legs are nailed so that they won't be able to move.

Currently, five EU countries, including Bulgaria, produce foie gras. Bulgaria is the second largest producer in Europe after France. The sector employs over 5,000 people in Bulgaria, became clear from the radio programme Before Everyone, as explained by Dimitar Belorechkov, president of the Union of Poultry. He added that the birds no longer live in cages in Bulgaria and predicted that the initiative will not be accepted in the European Parliament.

Yavor Getchev, from the Bulgarian branch of the International Foundation for the Protection of Animals Four Paws, reminded that our country has gone through a similar procedure in terms of the production of eggs from free-range hens. Imagine an animal which spends its entire life in a cage, unable to move, which is fed forcefully through a tube until its liver increases. Then, it is killed. Imagine that your liver is not able to function normally. The traditional way of feeding geese has not changed in the last 2,000 years.
