Bulgaria to ask EC again if Turkey will build an NPP near Rezovo

European MP Andrey Kovachev will submit again written questions to EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger and Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule, whether Turkey intends to build a nuclear power plant near our border village of Rezovo. This was announced by members of GERB (Bourgas), cited by BTA. The MEP will request a meeting with the Turkish Minister for EU Egemen Bagis in the shortest possible time.

The group of GERB deputies from Bourgas said in an official letter that they are "concerned about the lack of official information about the intentions of our neighbour on the development of the border region, where Turkish citizens have already protested against the construction of power plants. This means that the municipality of Tsarevo, Primorsko and Sozopol will no longer be attractive destinations for tourism. The possible construction of a nuclear power plant near the resorts would be an irreparable blow to the economy not only of the region but also of our entire nation," read the letter to the institutions.

Information in the Turkish media about the construction of a nuclear power plant in the town of Igneada appeared in the summer of last year. Then, the group of MPs from GERB in the Bourgas region referred the case to GERB MEP Andrey Kovachev and he made an official inquiry of the case to EU Commissioner for Energy Guenther Oettinger. He responded that at that time Turkey had not confirmed officially whether it has plans for a nuclear power plant in the border region.
