Tsvetan Tsvetanov: We are strictly implementing the Schengen criteria

Our country is seeing an upgrade in the best practices in terms of security and protection of the external borders of the European Union, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov said on BNR's programme Sunday 150. According to Tsvetanov, Bulgaria is strictly implementing the criteria for accession to the Schengen area. He cited as an example the integrated system of the Bulgarian-Turkish border, covering 58 km of the most vulnerable part of the "green border" between the two countries.

"There are criteria for the entry into the Schengen area, which Bulgaria and Romania had already met by March 2011 and the only thing needed now is to take a political decision." But he admitted that Bulgaria is still playing a leading role in the sphere of frauds via skimming devices and counterfeit credit cards, people and drug trafficking. Tsvetanov said that the government is working in collaboration with several European and transatlantic organisations in order to solve these problems.

Regarding the scandals around the election of Veneta Markovska as constitutional judge, according to the Deputy Prime Minister, this is a war of discredit which will continue in the future. Tsvetanov said that he doesn't want to comment on the case because there is no legal basis for this and added that the choice of any constitutional judge should be based on his or her professional qualities.
