Four-fold increase of patients with diabetes in ten years

The incidence of diabetes mellitus in Bulgaria has increased four times in the last 10 years. This was announced by medical specialists in Pleven, on the eve of the World Day to Combat Diabetes - November 14. In the past 20 years, diabetes among children has doubled - from 6.2 per 100,000 to 12 per 100,000 child population, doctors explained, citing data by Novo Nordisk.

Estimates in Europe show that more than 23 million adults in the EU suffer from diabetes, while the costs for their health care are between 5 and 10% of total health spending.

More than 4.5 million people died worldwide last year because of diabetes and over $465 bn were spent for the treatment of this disease.

It is expected that in 2030 the number of ill people will reach 552 million, BTA added. The reason for the negative trend, according to experts, is that people have a more sedentary lifestyle, their eating habits are changing to more unhealthy ones and they do not exercise daily. If young people continue this way, the prevalence of diabetes will increase, doctors predicted.
