38 haematologists from Varna resign because of low wages

38 people of the 53 employees of the Regional Centre for Haematology - Varna handed in their resignations in protest against the low wages and poor working conditions.

The leaving notices are a fact a month after the press conference at which the staff informed about the declaration referred to the Ministry of Health for a pay increase. The doctors want a bigger pay-roll and an allocation of 40% of the funds gained in the form of specialised and highly specialised tests.

Remunerations at the centre range from BGN 500 to 600 for doctors and about BGN 400 for nurses and laboratory staff. Last month, doctors insisted on a 20% increase as of July 1 this year and a 30% raise from the beginning of 2013. They asked for an improvement of working conditions as well.

So far, there is no response from the Ministry of Health, said Dr. Margarita Tochkova, Chairman of Podkrepa Labour Confederation at the centre. She added that the outcome is in the hands of the Ministry and if no action is taken within a month, the whole of Northeastern Bulgaria will be left without a blood centre.

Funds for salaries in the centre this year, provided by the budget, amount to BGN 32,000 per month. Currently, nine doctors work in the unit, although the standard number should be 15.
