Ministry of Agriculture and Food to increase control over online trade in foods

“The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) will strengthen control over the Internet trade in foods, Minister of Agriculture and Food Miroslav Naydenov said during the Safe Christmas discussion, held on Monday. “Trade, no matter whether online or in retail stores, can only be performed by registered companies. I have assigned to BFSA to cover the online sale of foods. There will be concrete actions in this direction,” said Minister Naydenov.

“The State may protect every user,” said Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Delian Dobrev. He stressed that Bulgarian consumers should know their rights when shopping. “The role of the Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) is increasing. This Commission works and protects our rights,” said Dobrev. He underlined that CCP works well and this was concluded from his personal experience.

CCP’s Vesselin Zlatev said that consumers’ safety has always been a priority in its work. “CCP’s inspections at Christmas will be primarily directed at online stores and those offering children’s goods,” he specified.

“Control will increase during the holidays,” confirmed BFSA’s Director Yordan Voinov. “We have found that online trade in foods is a weak link. We have initiated a legislative initiative - anyone trading in foods on the Internet should have registration. We will exercise daily control over online traders in foods. They should also have specialised vehicles for transportation of food,” specified Voinov. “I will recommend citizens to shop only at legal places. I prefer Bulgarian products. Currently, Bulgarian products are of a much better quality than the European ones, said Yordan Voinov."
