Cigarette packs with larger signs on the dangers of smoking

The European Commission presented a new directive on tobacco products. According to it, three quarters of every pack of cigarettes must bear warnings and pictures of the dangers of smoking, BNR announced on Thursday.

Data on tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide, which are regarded as misleading, should be replaced by a text that tobacco smoke contains more than 70 substances causing cancer.

Manufacturers will no longer be allowed to write "light", "mild" or "low tar content" on cigarette packs, nor use additives for a characteristic attractive flavour - chocolate, vanilla or menthol, new Health Commissioner Tonio Borg announced.

The ban on chewing tobacco will still apply. The Directive does not provide for a ban on the use of Oriental tobaccos of which Bulgaria was apprehensive. The Directive is expected to take effect after 3 or 4 years, if promptly adopted by the European Parliament and the Council.
