Growth in ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgucal industry for 2012

“Bulgaria’s metallurgical industry will report a small growth for 2012. The year was relatively good for the sector,” Politimi Paunova, Executive Director of the Bulgarian Association of the Metallurgical Industry (BAMI), said on Tuesday, quoted by Focus agency. The year was worse for the ferrous industry because manufacturers of steel products posted losses on the domestic market, despite the implementation of major infrastructure projects. The situation in the non-ferrous industry was more favourable because non-ferrous metals are commodities traded on exchanges and are not dependent on a specific market because they are traded worldwide. “Bulgaria can boast of a well-functioning non-ferrous metallurgical industry,” added Paunova.

The biggest problem which metallurgists in Bulgaria face every day are the high prices of electricity since the metallurgical industry is energy intensive. The non-ferrous industry is influenced by the price of electricity and the ferrous industry – by the price of natural gas. The other problems Bulgaria’s metallurgy faces is the lack of a liberalised market of energy sources, the expected price rise of electricity and the lack of government policies for compensation of the expected price rise of green energy. The Directive on greenhouse gas emissions of the European Commission stipulates specific measures to address the problems in the metallurgy sector and each country should earmark financial compensation for these enterprises. Bulgaria’s Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism is working very actively to solve the problems in the industry and metallurgists hope to hear, as early as the beginning of 2013, suggestions on improving the situation in the sector.
