Plevneliev: We should get down to business and put our country in order

“Let’s not wait for the crisis to run its natural course or the next ruling party to promise us the world, but rather get down to business and put our country and our own lives in order”, President Rosen Plevneliev said in his New Year’s Eve address.

According to Plevneliev the floods, the earthquake and the terrorist attack that marked 2012 have made the Bulgarian stronger and more united.

While acknowledging the negative effect of the five-year-long crisis, he insisted that Bulgarians’ incomes and prosperity depend largely on the strength of the country’s industry, the utilisation of its resources and the overall effectiveness of the nation. Plevneliev said that, in order to live in a modern and well-ordered country, Bulgarians need to be united in their efforts and have the same values.   

“Each and every one of us can make their contribution to the creation of a better Bulgaria in 2013. It’s not difficult, it just takes will and determination. Every parent can give love and  education to their child, instil values. It’s up to us to have a stance and stand by it,” the President said. He reminded of the first referendum in Bulgaria’s democratic government, which will be held on January 27, and the coming general elections as opportunities for Bulgarians to be more active and assert their right of justice and solidarity. Plevneliev thinks this will strengthen public control on politicians because democracy means freedom, but it is also responsibility.

“Let’s right the wrongs, but also have continuity and build on what is good. We don’t have the luxury of starting from scratch,” the President urged. “Let’s leave our nostalgic sentiments and give ourselves the confidence of a worthy nation in the 21st century. Because the world is moving on and waits for no one. Today, we are not just competing with ourselves or our Balkan neighbours, we are functioning in a rapidly changing and very competitive world.”
