Two-thirds of Bulgarian dairy farmers produce milk cheese

Two-thirds of the dairy farmers in Bulgaria produce cheese from milk and not from vegetable fats, announced the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The price of cheese is stable and milk products are more expensive than those containing palm oil. “The issue concerns prices, i.e. whether people can afford to buy the genuine products,” Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov commented on Wednesday, cited by BTA. “Dairy farmers will have to submit a schedule and orders in advance if they have to produce a product containing palm oil,” he added. Naydenov specified that exceptions will be allowed only if there is an order for production, as for export of foods with substitutes, for example.

“We are currently working on a procedure to allow production of such products only according to a schedule when there is order for a specific product. After the order is fulfilled, the Food Safety Agency will carry out an inspection and everything containing vegetable fats will be confiscated,” pointed out Naydenov.

“There are no grounds for a drastic increase in the price of milk cheese as a result of the restrictions on the use of palm oil in food products,” stated Naydenov.
