Over 60% of Bulgarians feel deterioration of air quality

Some 61% of Bulgarian citizens share the opinion that air quality in the country has deteriorated over the last 10 years. This result ranks Bulgaria close to the average figure for the European Union (EU) as a whole, showed a survey of Eurobarometer conducted in the EU Member States.

The majority of European citizens assess air quality in their respective country as worsening in the last decade. Less than one-fifth (16%) of the EU population have noticed a positive trend in the cleanliness of air. About a quarter of the population of the 27 EU Member States do not find any significant improvement or deterioration of air quality over the last 10 years and say it has rather remained unchanged.

Bulgaria ranks 12th among the 27 EU Member States in terms of the share of the population having concerns about deteriorating air quality in their respective country. Just over 60% of Bulgarians say that the air in Bulgaria is currently more polluted than 10 years ago. A little less than a quarter (22%) have not noticed a change in its quality, while 12% say that the air is even cleaner now than in 2003.

Industry and transport are the main threats to air quality, according to European citizens. According to 71% of the respondents in the EU, industrial activities are the biggest threat to air quality and 63% of Europeans view transport as having the most harmful impact to the environment and air.

Bulgarians rank threats to air quality in a similar way: some 55% of the respondents in our country believe that manufacturing and industry are the main factors for the deterioration of air quality and 51% of our compatriots share the opinion that cars and other vehicles are among the most harmful factors to the environment.
