The expansion of Sofia Airport to cost about BGN 2 mln

The expansion of the airport is being carried out according to all Schengen requirements, Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski said on the occasion of the groundbreaking of the Terminal 2 project at Sofia Airport, Focus News Agency reported. The project is worth nearly BGN 2 mln (1,947,557 VAT excluded) and the public procurement selected AT Engineering 2000 for its construction.

Reconstruction and expansion of the gallery at Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport are needed because of the growing number of passengers and need for better and faster servicing.

A platform for business aviation is also planned to be created behind the Government platform of Terminal 2, Sofia Airport's CEO Veselin Peykov announced. "I hope that, in a few weeks, the selection of the company that will implement the projects will be completed," he said, adding that this would bring revenues to the airport.

According to estimates, a new business terminal will not be justified and will be paid off no earlier than 15 years, at least, therefore the VIP part of the current Terminal 2 will be used.

"We want to make new arms and implement a docking system that will guide planes so that these could park on their own," said Peykov.

Peykov said that no new extensions to Terminal 2 can be built because of the tower and the construction of the underground. According to Peykov, the project for the underground is very beautiful.

He noted that the market share of Sofia Airport's ground handling services will reach 65% - 68% due to one of the biggest air carriers which the operator managed to win.
