Bulgarians spend 28% of their income on home maintenance

Bulgarians allocate 28% of their budget on costs associated with the home - rent, bills, or maintenance, shows a report of the Habitat for Humanity foundation. This puts Bulgaria slightly above the European average, which is 22%. Hungarians spend 24% of their current incomes on their homes, while Romania and Slovakia are close to the European average level of 22%. At the same time, Bulgaria is among the countries with the highest percentage of homeowners - more than 80% of Bulgarians live in their own home. About 97% of dwellings in this country are privately owned, as 3% are owned by the state, but although the number of people with their own home is large, many of them live below the European standards and 48% are on the verge of poverty.
