Hidden Orchestra will close The VII-th Edition of Jazz + Festival with a concert on the stage of Sofia Live Club on 6 April - this Wednesday.  Hidden Orchestra is the brainchild of one man / music machine, Joe Acheson - driving force behind the Edinburgh-based group. Joe Acheson, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, composer, music producer, sound designer and producer/presenter of radio documentaries for stations including BBC Radio 3 and 1Xtra. Formerly known as the Joe Acheson Quartet, Hidden Orchestra have long been championed by BBC Radio 1’s Introducing in Scotland and they enjoy an enviable reputation for their stunning live gigs.

The band consists of Joe (bass/samples/fx), Poppy Ackroyd (violin/keys) and 2 drummers; Tim Lane and Jamie Graham. You might think 2 drummers is a bit excessive, but they could actually do with another one to play all the layers in Joe’s production – one of them playing looped jazz solos, whilst the other brings out the main underlying hits that build up the overall groove. They have performed with Bonobo (live and DJ), Gilles Peterson, Jaga Jazzist, Red Snapper, The Bays, Aim, Alice Russell & TM Juke, Aaron Jerome, Zero dB … and Coolio.

Popular music critic Mark Edmundson writes about them "... Straddling the divide between sample-based recording and virtuoso live performance, JAQ's lush recordings take on a whole new hackle-raising bombast on stage thanks in part to a combination of heavy, jazz-kit riffs , Digital drums, programmed beats and percussion ... They're beyond words - we couldn't possibly do justice to their enveloping digital / acoustic live performance in here. Quite like nothing else on the Edinburgh scene or elsewhere, they really must be sampled to be believed. "

Their debut album, Night Walks, is heavily influenced by classical, jazz, all shapes and sizes of electronica and dance music with the simplicity and honesty of folk and rock to balance the scales. It was released on Tru Thoughts in September 2010.
