Naydenov projects that maize crop will drop by 40%

“The maize crop this year will drop by 40% because of the drought,” Miroslav Naydenov, Minister of Agriculture and Foods, projected during his visit to the towns of Rakovski and Brezovo, quoted by Focus Information Agency. He said that the poor yields of forage crops will push up the prices of meat and dairy products. Mr. Naydenov also commented that Bulgaria did not lag behind global trends and was in line with forecasts by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for a dramatic decline in maize crops this year. Compared to last year when 2 million tons of maize were produced, the maize crop this year will be just over 1.2 million tons. “The yield per decare will be about 300 tons,” Minister Naydenov specified but pointed out that the crops in some regions in Bulgaria will be much less than that. Therefore, he ordered that committees of the district agricultural services should make inspections and, in cases when farmers have lost 100% of their crops, they should receive a compensation of 80%, if they have insured their fields.
