Popularity of universal emergency number 112 in Bulgaria is growing

As much as 80% of Bulgarian citizens over the age of 15 say that in need of fire brigade, police or emergency medical service, they will call the universal number 112. That was revealed by a Eurobarometer research, conducted in the EU member states.

The European Union and the separate member states took special efforts in promoting and making people aware of the universal emergency number for the Community – 112. The aim is to enable each EU citizen to call for help in emergency cases by calling the same number in all EU countries. Despite the introduction of the single European number, the national numbers for the police, fire brigade and ambulance are still valid.

At present about half of the citizens of the European Community say that they would call the single number in case of emergency. Number 112 is highly popular in Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, and Denmark – between 92% and 96% of citizens in these North European countries say that if they need the police, fire brigade or an ambulance, they would call the single European telephone number. Romania is also among the countries where number 112 is highly popular – 91% of Romanians are ready to call the universal phone number in order to inform about an incident or another emergency situation.

The universal telephone number is the least popular in the United Kingdom and Greece. Only 1% of the British and 2% of the Greek would call 112 in case of emergency. In the case of Bulgaria, three out of four Bulgarian nationals say that if they need an ambulance, fire brigade or police, they will call the single number instead of the national numbers 150, 160 and 166. Thus, Bulgaria ranks 9th among EU member states in terms of popularity of the emergency telephone number.
