Wine grape harvest down this year but of a better quality

“The wine grape harvest will be about 30% down this year,” said Krasimir Koev, Executive Director of the Executive Agency on Vine and Wine. “However, the quality of grapes is very good and with very high sugar content. This means that although the grapes and the wine will be less this year, the taste will be excellent,” added the expert. So far, the wine cellars have harvested 55,000,000 kg of grapes – 39,000,000 kg white and 16,000,000 kg red. The quantity of white grapes is expected to be the same as last year – 66,000,000 tonnes,” specified Koev. However, he predicted a shortage of white wines again and higher purchase prices. Koev expects wine exports to increase by around 16%. In October, Bulgarian wineries will negotiate a considerable amount of export to China.

The new Wine and Spirits Act, adopted by Parliament on May 31, 2012 and promulgated in issue No 45 of the Official Gazette is in force as of September 16, 2012, the Executive Agency on Vine and Wine announced. The new law introduces new categories of grape and wine products. These are the wines with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) a protected designation of origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and varietal wines. Under the new law, by March 13, 2013, the Executive Agency on Vine and Wine will reregister grapes and wine producers entered in the register under Article 40, paragraph 1 of the repealed Wine and Spirits Act.
