EU may slash up to 55% of the money for Bulgaria under the next OP Transport

“The EU may slash some 35-55% of the money for Bulgaria under OP Transport for the next programming period,” Georgi Minchev, Chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Freight Forwarding, Transport and Logistics, told Klassa. However, the reason for the possible reduction of the programme is not our country but the shortage of money for all operational programmes in the community. According to Minchev, who is an authorised deputy of the committee monitoring the programme, signals for such a drastic reduction were received by the technical authorities in the management of the EC programme. “For the time being, these proposals have only been made at a technical level and a political decision should follow,” he explained. According to him, no budgets for the next programming period for any operational programme have been specified yet, but a decrease in the budgets is expected because of the crisis. “Although it was normal to expect cuts of between 7% and 10%, the signals of a much greater reduction are alarming,” he stated.

Bulgaria hoped to receive financing for transport in the next programming period of at least the current amount – a little over €2 bn. However, if it is slashed in accordance with the initial estimates, the money we will get would be even less than €1 bn. In this situation, the future of several projects would be questionable. According to Minchev, the issue of the money for the next period of OP Transport should not be politicised and all possible levers should be used in order to reject the proposal of the technical committee.
