Bulgaria expects €12 bn from the EU in 2014-2020

“Bulgaria will be the biggest beneficiary of funds for the next programming period (2014-2020) in terms of gross national income,” PM Boyko Borissov said after the discussions on the EU budget. Within the new financial framework, our country will receive more than €12 bn in net income from the EU - the difference between the funds it receives and these it pays to the Community budget.

“Despite the reduction in the total EU budget for the 2014-2020 period to €960 bn, compared to 2007-2013, Bulgaria will receive more funds for the new programming period. This is the first budget of the EU, which reduces money for the Community. Despite the reduction of funds under the cohesion policy in the new EU budget by €24 bn, compared to the current programming period, Bulgaria is one of the four countries to receive more funds, compared to the hitherto existing budget parameters. Our country will get around €7 bn in structural and cohesion funds, compared to €6.85 bn under the current budget,” commented PM Borissov.

Within the framework of budget cuts for the Common Agricultural Policy, Bulgaria is expected to receive around €7.5 bn (€5.8 bn so far) for direct payments and development of rural regions. In real terms, direct payments per hectare will continue to grow in Bulgaria and these are expected to increase from €184/hectare in 2014 to €228/hectare in 2020.

Additional European financing of €260 mln (an increase of €75 mln, compared to the original proposal of the European Commission) has been earmarked for safe decommissioning of Kozloduy NPP’s non-operating units.

“It is extremely important and I am very happy that, in addition to the funds our country will directly receive, a pan-European programme has been agreed for overcoming the consequences of youth unemployment,” said PM Borissov.
