The President of 'Podkrepa' Confederation of Labour weeps at his reelection

With the votes of 749 delegates, Doctor Konstantin Trenchev was reelected as President of Confederation of Labour (CL) 'Podkrepa' by the Eighth Congress of the syndicate yesterday. For his Vice President was reelected his hitherto deputy Dimitar Manolov.

"Unfortunately, the worst-case scenario occurred and I became a hostage of my own creation," summarized the situation Dr. Trenchev the last day of the Congress after having been advised by all structures of the trade union to run again for its president. In his most recent interviews, he announced several times that he was considering to withdraw from the leadership post. His words caused the salutatory speeches on the first day of the congress to change to the appeal: "Doctor, stay."

On the last day of the Forum envisaged for the election of new leadership, the Election Commission set 40 minutes time for submission of nominations. However, such were not filed. The circumstances demanded the time limit to be extended with further 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the delegates were persuading the hitherto leader to run for 'Podkrepa's President again. With tears in the eyes, he explained that he was not tempted by power and he would miss the syndicate but it had cost him a lot of energy for the last 22 years since its foundation. At the last minute, nevertheless, Dr. Trenchev decided to stand as a candidate. Afterwards he took the floor and delivered a very emotional speech in which he quoted the Bible, John F. Kennedy and Winston Churchill and appealed to the delegates to first change themselves.

Trenchev added that he was disappointed by what was happening in society, and especially by the war waged among politicians. "The state is crashing not economically and socially but rather spiritually," said the leader before the delegates of the Eighth Congress. "People are seeking rescue through hatred and malice and this is not the right path that will lead us out of the crisis," added he. The leader of the trade union sharply criticized politicians who as a result of the wars waged among them discourage people and deprive them of hope. It is because "everyone needs to know why one is suffering and must know when this suffering will end."
