Monthly scholarships granted to young scientists in Germany amount to €2,200

Sonia Stamboliyska

“Young scientists from Bulgaria can get a total of €2,250 in monthly scholarships in order to carry out research in Germany,” said yesterday Professor Ilza Pazheva, scholar-ambassador of the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation which provided the scholarships. The financial assistance is given to post-doctoratal students who have received their scientific degrees in the last four years and can last from 6 to 24 months.

Pazheva explained that additional funding, in the range of between €500 and €800 per month, covering research costs has been provided as well. It covers German language training, travel costs, family support and others.

The Foundation provides grants to experienced researchers (scientists who have received their Ph.D degree in the last 12 years). The scholarships granted to them amount to €2,450 together with additional benefits. Pazheva explained that, since the establishment of the Foundation, scholarships have been received by about 380 scientists from around the world.

"Every year, around 5 Bulgarian researchers receive this financial assistance," said she. Among the main criteria to be met by applicants are: to have a doctorate, have publications in reputed journals and books, and speak fluent English or German. Researchers should choose the university in which they will carry out their research and appear there with a prepared project. One can apply directly and at any time for the financial assistance. The foundation extends around 600 research grants annually, and there are no quotas for specific countries or specific scientific fields.
