A total of BGN 1 bn to be granted to farmers as of the next week

As of March 14, farmers will start receiving their subsidies per decare for 2010. The entire amount stands at over BGN 1 bn, out of which BGN 700 mln are EU funds, while BGN 300 mln will be granted from the national budget, announced Minister of Agriculture and Food, Miroslav Naydenov, yesterday, while attending the International Agricultural Exhibition AGRA held in the city of Plovdiv.

Only producers who have repaid their liabilities to the NRA (National Revenue Agency) will receive their subsidies. The Minister urged farmers to use the grants for the purchase of tractors and other agricultural machinery rather than buying modern and expensive vehicles.

The prices of some basic foodstuffs will increase due to the surge in fuel prices, predicted the Minister, who met in Plovdiv with the district directors of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA). He specified that there was a global price hike of food and it will probably continue after the crisis in the Arab world. The price rise should be regulated while taking into consideration these factors in order to prevent any future shady deals, said Naydenov. Today, in Sofia, he will meet with economists to discuss the actual possibility of monitoring prices.

It is inadmissible for grocery stores to be opened in garages and kiosk switch-gears, reckoned BFSA's Head, Doctor Yordan Voinov. He also explained that the Agency will inspect all grocery stores.
