By 2050 some 50% of freights and passengers transport to be carried out by trains and ships

Some 50% of passenger and cargo transport at medium intercity distances to be carried out by rail and water means instead of byautomobiles. Vehicles, running on conventional fuels would not be allowed in the cities. Some 40% of sustainable fuels, with lower carbon emissions would be used in aviation. Emissions from shipping would be reduced by at least 40% ...

These are some of the main goals of the European Commission strategy for Transport 2050, adopted yesterday. It targets the development of a competitive transportation system that will improve mobility and increase growth and employment. The proposals would reduce Europe's dependence on oil imports and greenhouse gas emissions from transport would decline by 60%, by the middle of the century, reports the EC Press Service.

Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for transport, said that Transport 2050 is the roadmap for competitive transportation, which will increase mobility and reduce emissions.

The roadmap of the Transport 2050 strategy stipulates different targets for the different types of trips - urban, interurban and long distances. For example, in intercity travel, some 50% of all passenger and freight transported over medium distances must be carried by rail and water instead of by road transport. By 2050, the majority of passenger medium distance transport, at around and above 300 km, must be carried by railways.

By 2030, some 30% of road freight transport on distances of more than 300 km should be transferred to other modes of transport such as rail or water shipment, but by 2050, the respective figure is expected to reach over 50%. By 2030, a fully operational EU core network of transport corridors (the program TEN-T) must be built. By 2050, a high quality network with large capacity and relevant set of information services must be ensured. By mid-century, all airports from the main network are planned to be connected with railway networks, possibly of high speed.

Radical changes in urban transport are envisaged. By 2030, vehicles powered by conventional fuels must be reduced by 50% and by 2050 these will gradually disappear in cities.

The strategy provides that the death toll in road transport be reduced to zero in the middle of the century.
