Icarus Awards for Theatre Presented in Sofia

Tedi Moskov is Theatre Director of the
Year according to the Union of Bulgarian Actors (UBA). He won
the 2011 Icarus Award for directing the plays "Cyrano de
Bergerac" (at the National Theatre in Sofia) and "The Views of a
Stump" (at the Puppet Theatre in Varna).

"Cyrano de Bergerac" also earned two other awards: for set
design, created by Chavdar Gyuzelev, and for technical mastery.

The distinctions were presented in Sofia on World Theatre Day,
March 27, in the year when the UBA is celebrating its 90th
anniversary.

"We discussed the theatrical reform at last year's award
ceremony. We are not going to discuss it now, but for those who
are left without bread as a result of the reform, we have
provided some cake," said the mistress of ceremony, Irmena
Chichikova. Her partner in the ceremony, Teodor Elmazov, handed
a piece of cake to each award winner.

The Best Theatrical Production Award went to "Nordost", directed
by Vassilena Radeva at the Youth Theatre in Sofia.

Marius Kourkinski was named Best Lead Actor for his one-man show
"Bulgarian Stories", produced by the Theatre of Plovdiv and
Artishock Productions. Irini Zhambonas was honoured as Best Lead
Actress for her part in "Cancun", produced by Beyond the Canal
Theatre in Sofia and the Theatre of Plovdiv.

Actor Todor Kolev earned a standing ovation when he was
receiving the Award for Extraordinary Contribution to Drama
Theatre. Panayot Dobrev was awarded for his lifetime
contribution to puppet theatre.

The Icarus Award for Puppet Art went to Rin Yamamura, a Japanese
resident in Bulgaria, for her set design for "King Shrimp" at
the Theatre of Pazardjik.

Ivan Burnev pranced onto stage to receive the Best Supporting
Actor Award for his part in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest",
directed by Alexander Morfov at the National Theatre.

Tsvetana Maneva, who was honoured as Best Supporting Actress for
her role in "Electra" at Sofia Theatre, joked that she was
surprised to feel so vibrant at such an advanced age.

Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov presented his Ministry's awards
for most successful management and marketing to the National
Theatre and the Puppet Theatre of Plovdiv.

Pavlin Dimitrov was named Best Debut Actor for his part in
"First Love", produced by H2O Film. Alexander Deyanov and Maria
Ilcheva won the Best Music Award for their contribution to the
play "Nocturne: From Dust to Glow", produced by the Association
for Contemporary Alternative Art and Culture. Critic Ina
Bozhidarova was honoured for her book "Drama Adaptation".

The Golden Voice Award for voice-over dubbing was conferred on
Alexander Voronov for his contribution to the TV series "Crazy
Neighbours".

The Icarus Award for Circus Art went to Encho Keryazov for his
remarkable achievements in acrobatics and equilibristics.
Stefanka "Senko" Karayoncheva was honoured in the variety show
category for "The Legend of Mr Senko".
