Disputes between Turkey and Azerbaijan delay Nabucco gas pipeline

“There are issues to be agreed between Turkey and Azerbaijan, and this is delaying the construction of the Nabucco gas pipeline, Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traicho Traikov said yesterday on BNT (Bulgarian National Television). He refused to comment which side was to blame for the delay but he expressed his hope that a solution to the problems would be found as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the company owning the pipeline - Nabucco Gas Pipeline International - said that the Italian company D’Appolonia was chosen to consult the preparation of the social and environmental impact assessment of the project. The company will prepare all the documentation and will conduct the research but the deadline has not been specified yet.

Minister Traikov said that the people living in Novi Pazar and the region have no reasons to worry about the future shale gas prospecting there. According to him, an environmental impact assessment will be necessary only if commercial deposits of the alternative fuel are found. He added that if gas deposits are found, half of the concession fees will go to local municipalities.

Regarding the price rise of fuels, Traikov said that half of the increase can be attributed to greater demand and the more expensive oil in the refineries in the region. The other half goes to higher company profits. According to Minister Traikov, retail prices of fuels in Bulgaria have become higher, compared to other EU countries in relative terms.
