Parvanov convenes the Consultative Council for National Security in order to prevent ethnic tension

President Georgi Parvanov convened a meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security (CCNS) on Saturday, October 1, announced yesterday the press secretariat of the Head of State. The topic to be discussed is "Current problems of the National Internal Security. Urgent measures for Ensuring Law and Order in Our Country and for Prevention of Ethnic Tension." Reports will be presented by Deputy Interior Minister Vesselin Vuchkov, who is currently acting as Interior Minister, since Tsvetanov went on adminsitrative leave because of the presidential pre-election campaign, and Secretary General of the Interior Kalin Georgiev. Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev was also invited to the meeting.

Yesterday, Velchev himself sent letters to the heads of the prosecutors' offices across our country, instructing them to investigate immediately each signal for incitement to religious, racial or ethnic hatred. The Chief Prosecutor demands that the prosecutors order the police to guard mass events and arrest uncompromisingly anyone who dares to commit a similar offense. "If there is sufficient evidence, the competent prosecutors should immediately launch an investigation. If additional data is necessary, they must assign preliminary inspections in the short term and in all cases should request the results," wrote Velchev to his suboridnates.

The Prosecutor General delivered his letter of instructions on the occasion of the public tensions, caused by the riot in the village of Katunitsa and the tragic death of the 19-year-old Angel and the 16-year-old Pavel, which provoked mass protests of thousands of young people throughout the country. Part of the demonstration on Monday incited clashes with the police officers, who detained over 100 people.
Meanwhile, the Council for Electronic Media (CEM) recommended that the media should avoid sensation seeking and should consider the real consequences, while showing restraint and humane concern when covering the events related to Katunitsa and the subsequent protests.

"The ethnic peace in Bulgaria is the only thing, which guarantees the prosperity of the state, since any other action will doom the country to failure," commented also Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. According to him, only a month later "people will throw stones" at those blamed to have caused its international isolation. In his opinion, after the elections all these conflicts will be forgotten.
