Boyko Borissov: We will enter the Eurozone only when we see some rules there

“We will enter the Eurozone only when we see some rules there. From a place guaranteeing stability the area is turning into a grantor of money and a supporter of troubled countries -  and its purpose is quite different,” PM Boyko Borissov said yesterday at the opening of a Bulgarian-Czech business forum in Prague. The Bulgarian Prime Minister paid a two-day visit to the Czech capital on October 3 and 4 at the invitation of his Czech counterpart, Petr Nečas. “The governments of the Czech Republic and of Bulgaria flatly decline to mention a date for joining the Eurozone because nobody knows what will happen with this project,” Czech PM Petr Nečas said in turn, quoted by AFP.

“European countries with a budget deficit exceeding 3% of their GDP should bring their wages and pensions to our levels and will thus solve their problem in a year or two,” PM Borissov recommended after his meeting with the Czech Prime Minister. “In the Bulgarian Parliament we are trying to amend the Constitution so as to include a provision that no government could allow a budget deficit exceeding 3% of the country’s GDP. This should be stipulated in the Common European Constitution and in all EU member-states’ constitutions,” he suggested and added: “Is there any government that does not want to raise the pensions. We also want to enable elderly people travel and live well. What kind of populism is that, practiced by European leaders?”

We don’t want a loan from IMF

“Bulgaria does not need a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), we have a fiscal reserve which makes both the Bulgarian lev and the Euro stable,” stated PM Borissov and then pointed to our country’s credit ratings. “It’s not accidental that Moody’s upgraded Bulgaria’s credit rating and we expect Standard & Poor’s to pass its judgement on our state within a month,” he said. According to him, the fair evaluation is due to the country’s internal stability, the absorption of EU funds, the improved conditions for tourism and farming. Asked by Czech journalists about the low incomes in Bulgaria, the Prime Minister replied that deposits of the population in Bulgarian banks exceeded BGN 30 bn. “We face the problem of encouraging consumption,” he admitted though.
