Bulgaria demands an extension of the deadline for the implementation of projects worth BGN 400 mln

Over the last few months, Bulgaria has applied for the reimbursement of certified expenditures amounting to nearly €400 mln, which excludes the possibility of our country losing even a single Euro cent in 2011, stated on BNT (Bulgarian National Television) Minister of EU Funds Management, Tomislav Donchev, from Brussels while commenting on the concerns of MEP Evgeni Kirilov released yesterday. Kirilov fears that, as early as this year, Bulgaria could lose grants worth €140 mln under various EU Operational Programmes. As a member of the EP Committee on Regional Development, he cited data showing that Bulgaria ranked second to last among EU member-states in terms of grants allocated by the European Regional Development Fund and the EU Cohesion Fund.

The Ministers of EU Funds Management, Tomislav Donchev, and of Environment and Waters, Nona Karadzhova, as well as the Ministers of Regional Development and Public Works, Lilyana Pavlova, and of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, Ivaylo Moskovski, spoke in Brussels with EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn. They also discussed issues related to the utilisation and management of EU funds by the end of the current programming period (December 2013). They debated the regulations governing the Structural and Cohesion Funds. Ministers Donchev and Moskovski also participated in the Antwerp summit concerning the interconnection of EU transport.

There, Moskovski took the floor immediately after the Vice-President of the European Commission, Siim Kallas. The modernisation of the transport infrastructure is one of the most important priorities of the Bulgarian GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) government. We expect significant benefits from the construction of the new network and we are committed to the timely implementation of the projects on Bulgarian territory, said Moskovski.
