Bulgaria's consumption for 2010 is merely 40% of the EU average

In 2010, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita in EU member-states ranged from 44 % to 271% of the average for the 27 EU countries, i.e. it differed more than six-fold, reported Eurostat. According to the data, Luxembourg's GDP index in terms of purchasing power standards (PPS) was two and a half times higher than the EU average, while the Netherlands' GDP per capita is one-third higher than the EU average. The GDP index of Ireland, Denmark, Austria and Sweden reached 20-30% above the general level, while that of Belgium, Germany and Finland was approximately 15-20% higher. British and French GDP per capita was only 10% higher than the average EU rate, while the indices of Italy, Spain and Cyprus were close to that percentage. Greece, Slovenia, Malta, Portugal and the Czech Republic generated and consumed a slightly lower GDP of 10-20%, while the GDP index of Slovakia was 25% lower. According to the data, Hungary, Estonia, Poland, as well as Latvia and Lithuania slumped below the basic EU level by between 35 and 50%. Romania and Bulgaria ranked at the bottom of the chart with 55% below the EU average. Although GDP per capita is most often used to calculate the well-being of individual countries, it is not the only indicator. The alternative index, which is adjusted to better reflect the status of households, is the actual individual consumption (AIC) per capita. In 2010, the index varied from 50% above the average level for the 27 EU member-states  for Luxembourg to almost 60% below that average for Bulgaria. Denmark remained the country with the highest price level among EU member-states (47% above the EU-27 average), while the lowest prices (less than half of the EU-27 average) were registered in Romania and Bulgaria.
