Construction of South Stream to start by the end of the year

”Construction of the South Stream pipeline will start by the end of this year,” said yesterday officials from the Russian Gazprom company, quoted by BGNES. The plans of the Russian company were for the construction to be initiated in early 2013. However, Gazprom decided to accelerate the implementation of the facility by several months after a decree of Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin. The management of Gazprom already has drafted a detailed plan with measures that have to be carried out, by December this year, in order to enable the project implementation.

It is envisaged that the pipeline will pass under the Black Sea and will reach the Bulgarian coast at the city of Varna. It will continue on our territory to the Serbian town of of Zajcar and then to Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. The original plan was for the pipeline to reach Austria, but Gazprom gave up the idea. The pipeline will supply fuel for Greece as well using the Bulgarian gas transmission system. The South Stream project should be completed in 2015.
