Rossen Plevneliev: The German policy will lead to the strengthening of Europe

I am one hundred percent convinced that the German policy will lead to the strengthening of Europe, stated President Rossen Plevneliev in an interview for the yesterday's edition of the Financial Times Deutschland. According to the Bulgarian Head of State, the concepts of German Chancellor Angela Merkel for financial stability should become a top priority for the entire EU, while the drafted savings scheme should not hinder the overall growth. According to Rossen Plevneliev, this means that the public funds should be used only for investments and not for other purposes.

Bulgaria supports the idea that Germany should take the leading role in Europe, as well as the idea of introducing austere savings measures at an EU level, summarised the President of Bulgaria. According to Rossen Plevneliev, the future generations must also be able to finance their top priorities and Chancellor Merkel can rely on the EU member countries from Eastern Europe.

In Southern Europe, the savings requirements are too burdensome for many politicians and citizens, stressed Plevneliev and underlined: "Since the rule of Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, Germany has been committed to the European unity."

According to the Head of State, the Bulgarian efficient fiscal policy could serve as an example for the debt-ridden Greece and if the latter follows a similar policy, it will possibly result in radical reduction of its default. Rossen Plevneliev reminded that 10 years ago Bulgaria's total indebtedness had reached 100 percent of GDP, while today it stood at only 16% of GDP. The President also indicated that at the end of the 1990s the total delinquency rate of Greece had also been less than 100 percent, but currently it reached 170% of GDP.

In fact, the large scale privatisation process in Bulgaria developed very dramatically and quickly. In our country, a total of 100,000 employees in the construction sector and 15,000 in the public sector were dismissed, clarified Plevneliev, adding that Greece should cut overall 100,000 jobs in the short term.
