Mandatory insurance for farmers considered

“The idea of introducing a mandatory minimum insurance for all farmers will be considered,” Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov said in an interview for Darik Radio. According to him, the insurance will be minimal, e.g. BGN 0.50 per decare, in order to be tolerable for farmers. It will be required from all agricultural producers eligible to receive financial assistance. “About 30 million decares in the country are eligible for such assistance and, if an insurance of BGN 0.50/dca is paid on this area, we will raise funds of BGN 15 mln,” added Naydenov.

He said that he had already assigned to experts the task of preparing a scheme which will be consulted with representatives of various sectors in agriculture. Common practice in other EU countries will be used to develop the new insurance scheme. Naydenov specified that the experts had been working on the project even before the disaster in the village of Bisser. According to him, the State is obliged to financially assist the farmers in this particular case, even if they are not insured, because the cause of the flooding was a broken dam wall and not a natural phenomenon.
